Rawiller to Ride Derry Grove in the Kosciuszko
Leading Kosciuszko contender, Derry Grove, has received a significant boost with the key booking of top-quality rider Nash Rawiller.
The Matt Dunn-trained and Viva Racing-owned gelding has made a name for himself with a devastating five-length win at Randwick on August 19th.
Trainer Matt Dunn said Derry Grove is the leading seed for the stable and will be in prime condition for the race to be held at Randwick on Saturday, October 14th.
"Nash encouraged the ownership group to target the race following his impressive win at Randwick in his last start," he said.
"Derry Grove has always displayed outstanding talent and we earmarked him as a Group-level horse in the early stages of his career. He was a dominant winner in his first start at Warwick Farm."
A few minor setbacks post his debut win prevented him from reaching the lofty heights envisioned for him early on. However, this preparation, he has put it all together and showcased his exceptional talent.
Derry Grove will carry only 55.5kgs in the Kosciuszko and is an outstanding option for slot holders. He has demonstrated versatility in handling all track surfaces and a flexible racing pattern. He won his first race this preparation on a good track while leading and in his most recent victory, he accelerated quickly on a wet track from an off-the-speed position.
"He is somewhat of the new kid on the block and certainly has the ability to not only be competitive in the Kosciusko, but I believe he can win the race," said Dunn.
Derry Grove will return to the races at Randwick on Saturday, September 16th, in a Highway Handicap over 1000 metres. If selected by a slot holder, he will then head straight to the Kosciuszko on Saturday, October 14th.
